Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum (DKRZ) is Germany’s national, domain-specific HPC center dedicated exclusively to climate and Earth system science. It manages over 250 petabytes of data, operates the World Data Center for Climate, and provides vital simulation and storage services to global researchers.

Solutions

VAST deployed its AI OS and DataSpace to modernize DKRZ's HPC home and software environments. The high-IOPS platform natively handles small-file heavy workflows, introduces shared project environments, and uses rolling, non-disruptive upgrades to eliminate user maintenance downtime.

Results

DKRZ achieved a 5.5x general data reduction factor, reaching 20x+ in build environments, saving massive storage capacity. The system eliminated user downtime through non-disruptive rolling upgrades and vastly accelerated high-IOPS, small-file, and Python workflows for climate researchers.
