Creating A View - Demonstration (Views & View Policies in the VAST Management System)

This video from VAST Data Customer Education provides a practical demonstration of creating and configuring views within the VAST Management System (VMS). For storage administrators, this guide offers a step-by-step look at how to quickly establish NFS exports and SMB shares to present data to your clients. The demonstration begins with a brief overview of two simple, pre-configured view policies: one with an NFS security flavor and another with an SMB security flavor. This sets the stage for understanding how these policies govern the behavior and permission models of the views that use them. We then proceed with a live, hands-on walkthrough of the creation process in the VMS GUI:

  • Creating an NFS View: Watch as we create a new NFS export, associate it with the NFS view policy, and use a Linux client with showmount to verify its immediate availability. We then mount the export and demonstrate basic file creation.

  • Creating an SMB View: The process is repeated for SMB. We create a new view, configure an SMB share name, and show how the share appears instantly on a Windows client, ready for file access.

The demonstration highlights how these views are made available for client access as soon as they are created. It also briefly touches on the default open permissions and how to apply more restrictive permissions post-creation using the native tools of each protocol (chmod for NFS and Windows permissions for SMB), showcasing the distinct permission models in action. This tutorial provides VAST Data operators with a practical, step-by-step guide to creating and deploying views for quick and simple storage networking.
