Configuring the VAST DNS Service (Networking in the VAST Management System)

This video from VAST Data Customer Education focuses on the configuration of the VAST DNS service within the VAST Management System (VMS), a key component for managing networking and client access on VAST clusters. This guide is designed for storage administrators responsible for setting up and optimizing VAST Data storage environments. We will walk through the simple configuration steps, explaining the various settings available when defining the VAST DNS service:

  • Assigning a service name and the IP address it will respond to.

  • Configuring gateway, suffix, subnet mask, and VLAN tagging for the service interface.

Understanding the flexible placement options, allowing the service to run on any CNode (default), the management network (external port), the northbound network (client-facing), or the southbound network. The video also covers the Time To Live (TTL) setting for DNS queries. Learn about the default 1-second TTL and the option for a 0 TTL to ensure different IP responses for simultaneous requests, along with important considerations regarding compatibility with upstream DNS servers like Microsoft DNS. Furthermore, we explain how the VAST DNS service responds to requests for addresses above the base of a VIP pool’s FQDN. This functionality is demonstrated as being beneficial not only for S3 buckets but also for distributing VMware datastores across different IP addresses when using VAST as backend storage for virtualization environments, offering additional performance options. This tutorial provides VAST Data operators with the practical knowledge needed to configure the VAST DNS service effectively for streamlined storage networking and enhanced data access.
