Overview

CINECA is one of the world’s most preeminent computing centers and a leader in global supercomputing. Its Leonardo supercomputer is #6 on the TOP500 and its Galileo100 is Italy’s largest HPC/cloud for public research, supporting scientists and engineers from 70 Italian universities and 50 research institutions. As one of the key pillars of the Galileo100 project, VAST will enable CINECA to create, manage and protect a 50 PB multi-protocol data lake connected to Leonardo and additional computing infrastructures.

Background

As CINECA’s scientific datasets grow in size and complexity, the ability to seamlessly manage, process, and analyze data across multiple systems and workflows will be critical to advancing scientific discovery and solving the world's most pressing challenges.

The convergence of HPC, AI, and big data analytics have created new data challenges that traditional scale-out and parallel file systems were not designed to handle. The architecture of large-scale infrastructure today is very different from what it was in the past. In addition to traditional HPC services, the CINECA team also provides resources for cloud, AI, and big data.

Outcome

The VAST Data Platform offers CINECA a centralized, high-performance scale-out foundation for highly complex computational workloads. After years of managing parallel file systems, CINECA was looking for an easier-to-manage platform that could still deliver the performance they needed. With VAST they can get all the performance and scale of parallel file systems via standard NAS protocols like NFS while gaining unparalleled simplicity and reliability.

The Galileo100 upgrade project will bring about a significant advancement and diversification of the computational resources made available to Italian and European researchers.
