SSD Scarcity & Infrastructure Efficiency

Overcoming the SSD Shortage for AI and Analytics

A deep dive into the architecture and real-world data behind VAST’s approach to flash efficiency, showing how purpose-built design reduces total data overhead to under 12% and delivers median data reduction of about 2:1 validated across exabytes of production deployments.

When Flash Scarcity Is an Architecture Problem

Flash supply constraints are real, but they are only part of the problem. Most organizations already have massive amounts of SSD capacity deployed, yet much of it is trapped inside architectures built for a different era: replication-heavy protection models, siloed data stacks, and performance designs that rely on overprovisioned flash.

As SSD prices rise and lead times stretch, these inefficiencies directly constrain innovation. AI training pipelines stall. Historical data is deleted. Infrastructure planning turns into rationing.

The VAST AI Operating System was built for a world where flash is scarce, not disposable. By eliminating architectural waste at the platform level, VAST enables organizations to recover usable capacity, retain more data, and scale performance, without waiting on the supply chain.

Key Benefits

Maximize Flash Efficiency at Enterprise Scale

VAST redefines how flash is used and protected, with a revolutionary architecture that allows enterprises to scale data and AI workloads without scaling hardware, complexity, or cost. By applying efficiency, durability, and intelligence once at the platform level, organizations unlock dramatically more usable capacity, eliminate redundant copies across systems, and build a unified foundation designed for modern analytics and AI.

Recover Stranded Flash Capacity

Unlock significantly more usable capacity by eliminating replication and minimizing protection overhead, while maintaining low-latency writes and predictable endurance. Locally decodable erasure coding reduces protection overhead by ~90%.

Decouple Data Growth From Hardware Growth

Retain all your data without expanding your flash footprint, deleting historical datasets, or constraining future AI initiatives. Global similarity-based data reduction delivers up to 6x effective capacity for AI, log, and telemetry workloads.

Eliminate Redundancy Across Silos with a Unified Platform

Apply durability and efficiency once, at the platform level, instead of duplicating protection and data copies across files, objects, tables, and analytics systems. Built-in durability and data reduction eliminate redundant copies across databases, analytics, and streaming systems.

VAST Amplify is a capacity amplification program designed for organizations that already own flash storage and want to unlock significantly more effective capacity without adding hardware. It is ideal for enterprises running data lakes, analytics platforms, AI pipelines, or large-scale storage environments constrained by SSD availability or efficiency.

VAST Amplify addresses constraints caused by architectural inefficiency rather than physical shortage. Eligible environments must use NVMe-based SSDs. The program supports flash deployed in:

  • Direct-attached storage (DAS) environments

  • Software-defined storage platforms

  • Enterprise storage systems

VAST works with customers to assess, qualify, and determine the best path to reuse or repurpose existing NVMe SSDs.

VAST Amplify increases effective capacity by eliminating architectural waste. The VAST Data Disaggregated Shared Everything (DASE) architecture reduces protection overhead, applies VAST’s proprietary Similarity-based global data reduction across the entire namespace, and enables shared use of flash across workloads. The result is dramatically higher usable capacity from the same physical SSDs, without overprovisioning or performance tradeoffs.

Participation begins with a VAST Amplify Assessment, which evaluates your existing environment, SSD health, protection overhead, data characteristics, and growth plans. Based on the assessment, VAST determines which assets qualify, then, based on results,  recommends a plan and estimates potential capacity amplification. Implementation planning and execution follow, tailored to your infrastructure and operational goals.

No. VAST Amplify is designed to avoid disruptive rip-and-replace migrations. In many cases, existing NVMe SSDs can be reused and redeployed directly into a VAST architecture, and depending on the environment, servers may be reused, repurposed, or selectively refreshed.

As with any infrastructure modernization, some deployments may require temporary staging or phased transitions to ensure continuity of operations. VAST plans and executes these steps as part of the Amplify engagement, minimizing risk and disruption while moving customers to a production-ready VAST system.
